Youth Decide on Climate Change

TUU societies Fair Go, Enviro Collective and TUU-BUG recently helped the organisation of the launch of the YOUth decide week in Tasmania. Activities included a mass flash mob bollywood dance and free vego bbq’s over two days for all who voted.

Throughout the week, over 37 000 young Australians voted, with the end result showing that over 95% of Australia’s youth want the government to adopt emission reductions targets of greater than 40% by 2020.

Listening to our concern on the issue of climate change action were Lord Mayor Rob Valentine, Lisa Singh MP, who is part of the governments climate change executive, Lara Giddings MP (deputy premier), Cassey O’Connor MP and Ald. Bill Harvey.

Thanks to the Fair Go members who danced, made bbq patties, served at the BBQ, and encouraged their friends to vote on what our future will look like. Also thanks to the TUU for funding, and to sponsors Jackman and McRoss Bakery.

RESULTS Australia fundraiser

On possibly the drizzliest, coldest day of the year, some genius decided to have a cake stall.
Fortunately, thanks to the massive baking contributions of our caring Fair Go members and their mums/dad/girls/boys and friend, about 50 offerings of cakes, cupcakes, brownies, toffee, pudding, and slice were put on offer. With the help of good looks, big smiles, death threats and force feeding we managed to raise over 1000 dollars. This money will be supporting RESULTS Australias (www.results.org.au) work to generate the will to end poverty.

1.4 Billion reasons to end extreme poverty

Fair Go society members were complicit in the presentation of 1.4 billion reasons by the Global Poverty Project crew. 1.4 billion reasons is modelled on the style of Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth and aims to catalyze the movement to end extreme poverty. It is presented by Oaktree founder and former young Australian of the year Hugh Evans, and has been travelling nationally and is on it’s way international in it’s well worthy bid of raising awareness about the problem and solutions to extreme poverty.

Fair Go society was able to help with the promotion of the event at UTAS (incl. the underpass painting pictured below) and also supplied volunteers to contribute to the running of both Hobart events. Abolish Nuclear Weapons

Tasty cakes, funky music and the sweet rattle of coins for a cause lit up the University on a grey Monday.

‘Close the Gap’ forum

‘Close the Gap’ Forum

On the 4th of May, the Fair Go society, along with the Tasmanian University Medical Students Society and Rustica (rural health society), presented a forum on ‘Closing the Gap’ at the Sandy Bay University campus.

About 25 interested individuals listened and contributed to the informative discussions between the guest speakers Tracy Dillon, an Indigenous health worker specialising in drugs and alcohol; Clair Anderson from Riawunna; Dr Sally Hildred and Dr Chris Henderson, two GPs who have worked extensively in Indigenous health, and Dr Gerry McGushin from the Oxfam State Committee.
Key themes to emerge from the talks included the need for a greater acceptance and celebration of the Indigenous culture and history of Tasmania and Australia, a continued effort to raise awareness of the massive health ‘gap’ between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, and the need for governments to support and fund programs which use community powered approaches to tackling the issues that our indigenous peoples face.

Fundraising for IWDA
